New Toll Tax Rule: No toll tax up to a Distance of 20km
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) released a notification on Tuesday, that private vehicle owners with a working Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) wonโt be charged for trips up to 20 km on highways and expressways daily. The new technology will be implemented soon, it’s on pilot test for now, if you drive a short distance on National Highways (NHs), you wonโt have to pay any tolls, even if there is a toll booth along the way.
On Wednesday, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that a pilot test of the GNSS-based toll collection system has been completed on the Bengaluru-Mysore stretch of NH-275 in Karnataka and the Panipat-Hisar section of NH-709 in Haryana. He explained that this GNSS system will initially be introduced as a trial on selected national highways alongside the existing FASTag system.

โค What is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic toll payment system overseen by the National Highway Authority of India. It uses rechargeable RFID tags to automatically pay tolls without the need to stop. These tags donโt expire and can be used as long as they stay intact and readable at toll booths.
โค What is GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System)?
GNSS based toll collection works by charging tolls based on the distance a vehicle travels, using a pay-as-you-go system. According to a post from the transport ministry on X (formerly Twitter), this system will first be tried out on a special lane at toll plazas for vehicles equipped with GNSS technology.
GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) uses satellites to pinpoint a vehicleโs exact location. It tracks the vehicle’s movement and calculates tolls based on how far it travels, aiming to make toll collection more efficient and reduce wait times at toll plazas.
