Justice Sanjiv Khanna – India’s 51st Chief Justice

Justice Sanjiv Khanna took the oath as India’s 51st Chief Justice today. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Khanna steps into the role after Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who retired yesterday, and he will serve in this position for about six months.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna was born on May 14, 1960, and began his legal journey in 1983 as an advocate in Delhi. He initially practiced in the District Courts at Tis Hazari in Delhi and later worked in the Delhi High Court and other tribunals. In 2005, he was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court and later appointed as permanent.

In January 2019, Justice Khanna was promoted to the Supreme Court of India, where he played a role in several important cases. His work includes judgments on key issues such as the abrogation of Article 370 (related to Jammu and Kashmir’s special status), the cancellation of the Electoral Bonds scheme, and supporting the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in Indian elections.
