Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin: First Woman to Lead Armed Forces Medical Services

On October 1, 2024, Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin made history by becoming the first woman officer to take charge as the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). This position makes her responsible for overseeing medical policies for the Indian Armed Forces and directly reporting to the Ministry of Defence.

Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarinโ€™s journey is one of exceptional dedication and accomplishment. Her journey started in December 1985 when she joined the Armed Forces Medical Services after completing her studies at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune. Over her 38-year career, she has earned numerous qualifications, including an MD in Radiodiagnosis from AFMC, Pune, and a Diplomate of the National Board in Radiation Oncology from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. She has also undergone advanced training in Gamma Knife Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

Before assuming her new role as the 46th DGAFMS, she held key positions such as Director General of Medical Services for the Navy and the Air Force, and Director & Commandant of AFMC, Pune. She has the rare distinction of serving in all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces โ€“ the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Her career has seen her rise from a Lieutenant in the Army to Surgeon Vice Admiral in the Navy, and she also held the rank of Air Marshal in the Air Force.

Her exceptional service has earned her numerous awards. In 2024, she was honored with the Ati Vishist Seva Medal, and in 2021, she received the Vishist Seva Medal for her outstanding dedication to patient care. She has also been recognized with commendations from the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief.

In addition to her professional achievements, Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin is committed to promoting safe working conditions for medical professionals. She has recently been appointed to the Supreme Courtโ€™s National Task Force, tasked with formulating protocols for medical safety. As a passionate advocate for women in the armed forces, she is a role model for young women and a strong voice for the government’s Nari Shakti initiative.
