Port Blair Renamed as Shri Vijayapuram
On September 13, 2024, Indiaโs Home Minister Amit Shah announced the renaming of Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to Shri Vijayapuram. This renaming honors Indiaโs rich historical and cultural heritage, particularly the contributions of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Why is Port Blair Important?
- Historic Site: This is where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose first raised the Indian flag during the freedom struggle.
- Cellular Jail: Port Blair has the Cellular Jail, where many freedom fighters were imprisoned by the British.
- Defense Hub: The city is home to INS Jarawa, a naval base, and Indiaโs first tri-services command, which unites the Army, Navy, and Air Force for joint defense.
