Port Blair Renamed as Shri Vijayapuram: Honoring India’s History

Port Blair Renamed as Shri Vijayapuram

On September 13, 2024, Indiaโ€™s Home Minister Amit Shah announced the renaming of Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to Shri Vijayapuram. This renaming honors Indiaโ€™s rich historical and cultural heritage, particularly the contributions of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Why is Port Blair Important?

  • Historic Site: This is where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose first raised the Indian flag during the freedom struggle.
  • Cellular Jail: Port Blair has the Cellular Jail, where many freedom fighters were imprisoned by the British.
  • Defense Hub: The city is home to INS Jarawa, a naval base, and Indiaโ€™s first tri-services command, which unites the Army, Navy, and Air Force for joint defense.
  • It was an important naval base during the Chola Empire

Previous Name Changes in Andaman and Nicobar

  • Neil Island became Shaheed Dweep, and Havelock Island was renamed Swaraj Dweep.
  • In 2023, 21 unnamed islands in the region were named after Param Vir Chakra winners, Indiaโ€™s highest military honor.

Why Shri Vijayapuram?
